افتراضي Affirmative Action Comprehensive Writing Model-10
قديم بتاريخ : 06-23-2015 الساعة : 06:24 PM

doing at least as well as the average white in areas such as jobs and education. Were this true for minorities and women, affirmative action programs would have achieved their goals. They have not gotten to the goals set by Presidents Johnson and Kennedy. They would no longer be necessary as a device to consciously recruit and promote qualified minorities and w!
omen in an effort to remedy discrimination.
Even though there has been great progress, serious inequalities still exist due to past and present discrimination. For example, white males hold 95 percent of senior managerial positions, and they comprise just 43 percent of the workforce (Rosenfeld 232). Also, women earn just 85 percent of the salaries of men with comparable jobs, education, and experience (Rosenfeld 232).
Women and minorities look forward to the day when employment and admission to colleges and universities will depend on an individuals qualifications and ability, regardless of the color of their skin or their gender. However, the United States is not ready for that step. In order to reach this point we must devise an alternative to replace affirmative action, not just abolish it, but as long as affirmative action is in effect there will always be racial tension. Such an alternative would be "the strengthening of the ‘intermediate’ institutions, such as community associations, schools, media, and independent social agencies, which provide the organizational foundation for collective development and effective public representation (Peters 211). So if the same amount of money was given to minority colleges and other institutions, the students that go to those colleges will feel better about their educations since the school is getting a sufficient amount of funds.
Centuries of discrimination will not be reversed solely by affirmative action. We should recognize that affirmative action is a temporary measure. We need to work on some long-term solutions, or the racial tension will only rise. Education at all levels, and in all areas needs more funding. The work force needs people of all color to represent them in their respective professions. People also need to realize that this nation's vast diversity is a great thing, and if we can all work together, this country will be stronger than ever. Without this thinking, we will still live in a tense, racially divided society.
